Everyday and cosmetic care

Checkups and cleanings
We recommend a checkup and professional cleaning every six months. Some problems are subtle enough that only a dentist can spot them early, and research links gum disease with conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
At a checkup we examine your teeth and gums for decay and signs of gum disease, check your bite and take X-rays when they are needed. Your hygienist then removes the plaque and tartar a toothbrush cannot reach, and shows you how to brush and floss for your own teeth.

Tooth-colored fillings
Fillings are made from either composite resin or silver amalgam. Both are safe and effective, but composite can be matched to the shade of your tooth, so the filling is almost invisible. That matters most on front teeth and anywhere that shows when you talk or smile.
Old silver fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored ones whenever you are ready, and sooner if a filling is leaking or causing problems. If a tooth-colored filling has become stained, it can often be polished rather than replaced: see Why is my filling stained or turning yellow?

Braces and orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment lines teeth up so they are easier to clean and work properly together, and for most people a confident smile is the biggest reward. We treat patients of all ages.
Every case starts with X-rays, impressions and photographs, and a treatment plan made for you. Treatment usually takes 18 to 24 months, depending on age, the problem being treated and how closely the plan is followed. Ceramic braces use clear brackets and are popular with adults, and for many adults Invisalign clear aligners are an alternative to braces altogether.
