A Dentist Four Minutes From Marin Boulevard

Marin Boulevard crosses Christopher Columbus Drive, and our door is four minutes west of that crossing, about a tenth of a mile. For most of the boulevard the trip is simply walking to the crossing and turning.

The boulevard was Henderson Street until it was renamed for Luis Muñoz Marín, the first elected governor of Puerto Rico. It runs north to south for a little over a mile and carries on into Hoboken, where it becomes Henderson Street again.

Three ways down

• On foot. Four minutes west along Christopher Columbus Drive from the crossing. This is the one most people use.
• By light rail. Marin Boulevard station is about eleven minutes from us. Worth knowing before you go looking for it: the platforms are on Morris Boulevard at the Marin Boulevard intersection, not on the boulevard itself.
• By bike. The city is adding a northbound protected lane on the boulevard to join the lanes already on Montgomery Street and Christopher Columbus Drive.

The station is served by the West Side to Tonnelle Avenue line and by the 8th Street to Hoboken line. The Bayonne Flyer does not stop there, which catches people out. Trains run from about 5am until about 1am, roughly every ten minutes. With around 1,380 riders on an average weekday it is one of the quieter stops on the line, which matters if you are bringing a child along.

Adding us to a trip you are making anyway

The ShopRite at 400 Marin Boulevard is the reason a lot of people are on the boulevard in the first place. An appointment before or after the weekly shop costs almost nothing in extra travel, and Saturday mornings tend to be the easiest slot to get. At the southern end of the boulevard there is a ferry dock running to Paulus Hook and to Pier 11 at Wall Street, so a morning appointment before the boat is also workable.

If you want to place yourself on the boulevard by its landmarks, the old Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse stands at the Bay Street end and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2001. The Harsimus Stem Embankment, the half-mile stone railroad wall, runs west from the boulevard along Sixth Street.

A street that is filling up

Marin Boulevard is changing faster than almost anywhere else downtown. Gull’s Cove at 201 alone holds 429 homes, and more towers are going up along the corridor. What that means in practice is a lot of new arrivals who have not yet found a dentist, and who will be told by the first office they call that the treatment they need happens somewhere else.

That is the thing worth knowing about us.
